Compare the running costs of petrol/diesel vehicles against electric vehicles. Enter your weekly fuel spend or driving distance to see potential savings.
Basic Mode: Enter your weekly fuel spend and see an instant estimate of EV savings, based on typical Australian fuel and electricity prices.
Advanced Mode: Enter your weekly driving distance, vehicle type (small car, sedan, SUV, ute), fuel type, electricity cost per kWh, and home vs public charging percentage for a more accurate estimate.
The calculator shows estimated weekly savings, annual savings, and CO2 reduction. Note: these are estimates based on average consumption figures and may vary based on your specific vehicle and driving conditions.
Basic mode estimates EV running costs at approximately 40% of equivalent fuel costs, based on average Australian fuel and electricity prices. Advanced mode uses Australian-average fuel consumption figures for each vehicle type, with diesel estimated at 85% of petrol consumption, and EV consumption figures based on comparable electric vehicles in each class (for example, a mid-size sedan is modelled on cars like the Tesla Model 3 or BYD Seal).
CO2 savings are calculated using the Australian Government figure of 2.31kg of CO2 emitted per litre of petrol burned. Default electricity price assumptions are $0.30/kWh for home charging (the Australian household average) and $0.45/kWh for public charging — both can be adjusted in Advanced mode to match your own rates.
These figures are estimates only and provide a general guide — your actual savings will depend on your specific vehicle, driving habits, electricity tariff, and local fuel prices, which change frequently. For live fuel prices in your area, see FueVolt's fuel price comparison.
