EV Battery Health: How to Maximise Your Electric Car Battery Life

Practical tips to preserve your EV battery over the long term, including charging habits, temperature management and what degradation really looks like.

The number one worry for many people thinking about an EV is not range or charging — it is the battery. "What happens in ten years when it dies and I'm up for a costly replacement?" It is a fair question, and the reassuring reality is that modern EV batteries last far longer than most people expect.

The battery is the most expensive component in an electric vehicle, often 30 to 40 per cent of the car's cost, so owners naturally want to know how long it will last. The government's energy.gov.au notes that many EV batteries last 15 to 20 years or 200,000-plus kilometres before significant degradation, and a few simple habits can stretch that even further.

How Long Do EV Batteries Last?

Most EV manufacturers warrant their batteries for 8 years or 160,000 kilometres, guaranteeing at least 70 per cent of original capacity. The government's electric vehicle facts page cites analysis of more than 22,700 EVs that put the average expected battery lifespan at around 13 years or more. Real-world data shows that many batteries retain 85 to 90 per cent capacity after 200,000 kilometres. A Tesla Model S study found average degradation of about 12 per cent after 300,000 kilometres.

This means an EV with a 500 km rated range would still deliver 425 to 450 km after years of use — more than enough for daily driving.

Understanding Battery Degradation

Lithium-ion batteries lose capacity gradually over time and use cycles. Two types of degradation occur:

Calendar aging happens simply with the passage of time, even if the car sits unused. It is accelerated by high temperatures and storing the battery at very high or very low states of charge.

Cycle aging happens with each charge and discharge cycle. It is accelerated by deep discharges (running the battery very low), frequent full charges (charging to 100 per cent), fast charging at high power, and charging or discharging in extreme temperatures.

Tips to Maximise Battery Life

Set your daily charge limit to 80 per cent. Most EVs allow you to set a maximum charge level. Keeping the battery between 20 and 80 per cent for daily use significantly reduces stress on the cells. Only charge to 100 per cent before long trips when you need the full range.

Minimise fast charging. DC fast charging generates heat and stresses battery cells more than slow AC charging. Using a home charger overnight is gentler on the battery. Fast charging is perfectly fine for road trips, but using it daily when home charging is available is suboptimal.

Avoid letting the battery sit at very low charge. Leaving your EV at 5 per cent for days or weeks accelerates calendar aging. If you are parking the car for an extended period, leave it at 50 to 60 per cent.

Park in the shade when possible. Extreme heat is the biggest enemy of lithium-ion batteries. Australian summers can push battery temperatures high, especially in direct sun. Parking in a garage, carport or shade reduces thermal stress.

Use the car's battery preconditioning feature. Many EVs can precondition (warm or cool) the battery while still plugged in, using mains power rather than battery power. This is especially useful before a fast-charging stop on a cold morning.

Battery Cooling Systems

Modern EVs use liquid-cooled battery packs that maintain cells within an optimal temperature range. These active thermal management systems are far superior to the air-cooled batteries found in earlier EVs like the first-generation Nissan Leaf. When buying a used EV, check whether it has active liquid cooling — this is a significant factor in long-term battery health.

Replacement Costs

If a battery eventually needs replacement outside warranty, ask the manufacturer or an accredited repairer for a current quote. Pack costs have generally fallen as battery production has scaled, but the owner-facing replacement price varies widely by vehicle, usable capacity, labour and whether individual modules can be repaired instead of replacing the whole pack.

Treat your EV battery like you treat your own health — consistent moderate habits are better than extreme behaviour. Charge regularly to 80 per cent, avoid extreme heat, minimise unnecessary fast charging, and your battery will serve you well for hundreds of thousands of kilometres.
