Almost everyone considering their first EV pictures the same nightmare: stranded on the side of the highway, battery at zero, nowhere to plug in. That fear even has a name — range anxiety — and it stops a lot of people before they start. Here is the thing though: it is almost entirely a fear of the unknown, and it fades fast once you actually live with an EV.
The reason is simple maths. The average Australian drives around 33 km a day, according to energy.gov.au — a tiny fraction of what a modern EV holds on a full charge. For the vast majority of drivers, range anxiety disappears within the first few weeks of ownership.
How Far Do Modern EVs Actually Go?
Many current EVs sold in Australia have a WLTP-rated range of roughly 300 to 500 kilometres, with some long-range models exceeding that. The exact figure varies by model, wheel size and battery, so use the manufacturer's current Australian specification as your starting point rather than comparing badge names alone.

WLTP Range vs Real-World Range
The WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure) range figure on the brochure is measured under controlled laboratory conditions. Real-world range is typically 10 to 20 per cent lower, depending on driving speed, temperature, terrain, climate control use and driving style.
Highway driving at 110 km/h uses significantly more energy than city driving at 50 to 60 km/h due to aerodynamic drag. In cold weather, battery performance drops and cabin heating draws energy. In hot weather, air conditioning also consumes power, though less than heating.
A car rated at 500 km WLTP range might achieve 400 to 450 km in summer highway driving and 350 to 400 km in winter.
Australia's Charging Network
Australia's public charging network continues to grow, with DC fast chargers available along many major highways — the Electric Vehicle Council reports steady expansion of public charging infrastructure year on year. Networks operated by the NRMA, Chargefox, Evie Networks and Tesla serve locations across the east coast, with coverage also expanding in WA, SA and Tasmania.
Key highway routes — Sydney to Melbourne, Sydney to Brisbane, Melbourne to Adelaide, Brisbane to Cairns — now have DC fast chargers spaced every 100 to 200 kilometres, well within the range of any modern EV.
Planning Long Trips
For trips beyond your car's single-charge range, planning is key. Use the FueVolt trip planner or a similar tool to identify charging stops along your route. A typical highway fast-charging stop of 20 to 30 minutes adds 200 to 300 kilometres of range, which aligns well with a coffee break or meal stop.
Arrive at fast chargers with 10 to 20 per cent battery remaining for the fastest charging speed. Batteries charge quickest when nearly empty and slow down as they approach 80 per cent, so charging from 10 to 80 per cent is much faster than 80 to 100 per cent.
Day-to-Day Reality
In daily life, most EV owners charge at home overnight and start every morning with a full battery. Range anxiety simply does not apply to the daily commute, school run or grocery trip. It is analogous to a mobile phone — you charge it overnight and it lasts all day.
The mental shift from "filling up when nearly empty" to "topping up regularly" is the key adjustment. Once you adopt this habit, range anxiety fades completely.
Tips for New EV Owners
Keep your car plugged in at home whenever practical. Set a daily charge limit of 80 per cent to preserve long-term battery health. Only charge to 100 per cent before long trips. Familiarise yourself with the two or three nearest public fast chargers to your home as backup options. Download multiple charging network apps so you have accounts ready to go.
Range anxiety is a valid concern for first-time buyers, but it is almost universally a temporary experience. After a few weeks of ownership, most drivers wonder why they worried at all.
