EV Charging Connector Types in Australia: Type 2, CCS, CHAdeMO and Tesla

Understand the different EV charging plugs used across Australia, which cars use which connectors, and how charging speeds differ.

There is a rite of passage for new EV owners: pulling up to a public charger for the first time, staring at the cable, and wondering whether it will even fit your car. With petrol, every nozzle fits every filler neck. With EVs, the plug depends on the manufacturer, the charging speed and the era the car was built — and getting caught out at the wrong connector is a genuinely common early mistake.

The good news is that Australia has largely settled on a small number of standards, so once you know your car's connector you rarely have to think about it again. Four connector types dominate the local market, and government resources like energy.gov.au's guide to EV charging equipment cover them in detail.

Type 2 (Mennekes)

Type 2 is the standard AC charging connector across Australia and Europe. It features a seven-pin circular plug and supports single-phase charging up to 7.4 kW and three-phase charging up to 22 kW. Every modern EV sold in Australia includes a Type 2 inlet for AC charging. When you see a public AC charger — the kind often found in shopping centres and council car parks — it almost certainly uses a Type 2 cable.

Home wall boxes also use Type 2. A typical home installation delivers 7 kW on a single-phase connection, adding roughly 40 kilometres of range per hour of charging.

CCS2 (Combined Charging System)

CCS2 is the dominant DC fast-charging standard in Australia. It extends the Type 2 connector with two additional DC power pins at the bottom. CCS2 chargers range from 50 kW to 350 kW, enabling rapid charging sessions. A 150 kW CCS2 charger can add around 200 kilometres of range in 15 to 20 minutes on a compatible vehicle.

Most new EVs from Hyundai, Kia, BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagen, Ford, BYD and many others use CCS2 for DC fast charging.

CHAdeMO

CHAdeMO was developed by Japanese automakers and was one of the first DC fast-charging standards. It uses a separate, bulkier round connector. In Australia, CHAdeMO is primarily used by the Nissan Leaf and the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Many older DC fast chargers include both CCS2 and CHAdeMO plugs, but new installations increasingly offer CCS2 only. CHAdeMO supports up to 100 kW in practice, though most Australian CHAdeMO chargers operate at 50 kW.

Tesla (NACS / Modified Type 2)

Tesla vehicles sold in Australia use a modified Type 2 connector that supports both AC and DC charging through the same port. Tesla Superchargers deliver up to 250 kW DC. Tesla's Destination Chargers at hotels and restaurants provide 7 to 22 kW AC. Tesla has been gradually opening its Supercharger network to non-Tesla vehicles via CCS2 adapters at select locations.

Choosing a Charger

Before plugging in, confirm your car's connector type. Most public charging services and FueVolt display which connectors each station offers. If you drive a non-Tesla EV made after 2020, CCS2 and Type 2 will cover nearly every public charger in Australia.

Charging Speed Tiers

Charging speed depends on both the charger output and your car's onboard acceptance rate. As energy.gov.au explains, slow AC chargers (up to 7 kW) are best for overnight top-ups, fast AC chargers (7 to 22 kW) suit a few hours at a shopping centre, and DC fast chargers (50 kW and above) are designed for highway stops where you need a quick boost.

Understanding your connector type and the charger speed available helps you plan stops efficiently and avoid arriving at an incompatible station.
